| G-Wind Spars are the new boys on the block. We have been making aluminium yacht mast in Durban since the beginning of 2005. It has been a long slow process but we are now coming of age, we have our own dies with Hulett-Hydro Extrusions in Pietermaritzburg for small sections off 1.0 kg/meter up to the largest that they can produce of 7.1 kg/meter. All our bigger section and wing sections come from an established mast building company in Australia, who have a vast array of modern extrusion dies available for large mast sections.
To complete our manufacturing facility in Westmead outside Durban, we have installed what we believe is the longest anodising plant in Africa. We can anodise a complete mast up to 23mts in length in one go. This has been extremely successful as most masts built in this country are fabricated from pre-anodised section, and components welded to the mast are touched up with paint. It also means that components are fastened to the anodised section with stainless steel fasteners, which as we all know is a weak point and prone to corrosion.
The rest of the line up is pretty standard, we import our own Dyform wire from the UK, and we have the latest hydraulic roll-swaging machine from Sweden which can swage terminals up to to 16mm .
We have plasma cutting & routing , mig and tig welding , bending , milling and turning facilities.
Initially the production boat builders were a little sceptical and we started out building masts for private owners . Gradually the boat builders have started to support us as the quality of our masts has improved to the stage where you can hardly tell the difference between our masts, and masts built by older established companies.
